Star Trek Review (short & spoiler-free) From A Guy Named After Captain Kirk

I've been a Star Trek fan longer than I've been alive (literally) and I was not excited about the new film for two reasons.

  1. I can't stand anything I've ever seen that was created by J.J. Abrams.
  2. I'm a stickler for canonicity. Revisionism ruins fictional universes for me.
That said, I went to the new Trek on opening night in hopes that it'll keep the franchise alive and somebody will keep making Star Trek stories. The new movie is no more intelligent than any other big budget action movie, but I was satisfied with Abrams' explanation for the differences from established Trek lore and enjoyed watching. Oddly enough the new main engineering annoyed me more than any of the standard-issue illogical action movie plot elements. Go see the movie and you'll know what I mean... looks like an old chemical manufacturing plant, not the heart of a ship as beautiful as the Enterprise.

I don't want to get into any spoilers, so I'll stop now.
Also, there's nothing after the credits end, so don't feel obligated to sit there 10 minutes hoping for more like I did tonight.

Oh, I almost forgot:
Peace, and Long Life.
